The aging process
as we all know isn't restricted to just us humans! Our kitties are
aging to and venturing into seniorhood, they ount on us to make
sure everything goes smoothly during that delicate time.
There has been
a two fold increase over the last ten years in the increase of cats
surviving past the age of six years, and many now livepast the age
of 12! The oldest recorded cat lived right up until he was 32!
Senior cats
need to feel secure and safe in their home environment and remember
to handle with care! Set up a comfortable ben in a quiet spot for
kitty to retreat to without to much hassle. Keep water redily avaliable.
Water fountains are great at encouraging drinking.
Speak with your
vet in regards to chaning to a senior diet which will be complete
and balanced for your kitty's body. You may need to encourage kitty
to eat as his appetite my decline with age. Aquire a litter tray
if you haven't got one already and keep it indoors as some cats
can start to feel more vunrable when toileting outside. Rule of
thumb with all litter trays - these need to be cleaned out at least
twice a day, and set in a low traffic area for kitty's piece and
quiet.
Encourage play
for a shot period of time each day. This will help keep kitty fit
and active. Check kitty's claws regulary and trim if neccessary.
If kitty is still active outdoors, set aside a time to groom kity
and check his condition fro ear to tail. Any abnormalities should
be checked out by your vet as soon as possible.
Hopefully by
the time kity has reached the golden years, your vet would have
gotten to know him very well. Six montly checkups are essential
to ensure your kitty's health. Cats suffer in silence - So any changes
in kitty's personality, especially in weight will require a visit
to our veterinarian.
